The RCVPR1a Camera Controller is an electronic device to be used to provide control of certain Sony digital cameras via Futaba RC radio. The device provides DC power and Sony control signals to the camera. Any camera feature that can be controlled by the Sony RM-VPR1 wired-remote controller can now be controlled via Futaba RC radio. These features include power On/Off, zoom in/out, focus/shutter, and video start/stop. The RCVPR1a can control any Sony camera that is compatible with the Sony VPR1 wired-remote control. The RC remote controls operate in paralel with the Sony buttons.
The FCE RCVPR1a Camera Controller includes a built-in DC-DC converter power supply that can be used to power the Sony RX100, HX300, or similar camera with 4.2 volts via a DC-coupler. The FCE RCVPR1a Controller itself can be powered from battery supply voltages between 11 volts DC and 25 VDC. This enables the device to operate from the 25 volt main battery used on some multi-rotor helicopters, for example.
The FCE RCVPR1a camera controller is intended to be connected between a Futaba Sbus RC receiver and the Sony Multi-connector of Sony cameras such as RX100 or HSC-DX300. The RCVPR1a is a hardware combination of a Sony RM-VPR1 device and a custom-designed circuit card. The Sony VPR1 communicates with the connected Sony camera exactly as Sony designed it to communicate: there is no modification to, or duplication of, the Sony communication interface. The interface between the RM-VPR1 and the camera is unmodified.
The RCVPR1a controller has been designed and built by Fern Creek Electronics Inc.(FCE), of Orlando, FL, USA. As can be seen in the accompanying photographs, the FCE RCVPR1 Controller is basically the combining of a Sony VPR1 wired-remote controller with a custom-built interface box.
The FCE RCVPR1 Controller operates the camera functions via specific RC channels within the Futaba Sbus signal. These channels are: Power On/Off Channel 9 Long RC Pulse Auto Focus Channel 10 Long RC Pulse Shutter & Auto Focus Channel 10 Short RC Pulse Zoom Narrow/Tight Channel 11 Long RC Pulse Zoom Wide Channel 11 Short RC Pulse Video Start or Stop Channel 12 Short RC Pulse
Channel assignments for camera functions may beFCE factory-customized per customer request. For example, zoom control may be moved to a different channel. This might allow two RCVPR1 controllers to be used to control two cameras with separate zoom control for each camera while other controls remain on the same channels for dual and near-simultaneous control of those functions. Channel assignments are set in embedded software and cannot be changed by the user.
Operator controls on a Futaba RC transmitter such as T8FG may be programmed to operate camera functions as the operator may wish. Programming instructions for transmitter controls are provided in the applicable Futaba user manual.
The RCVPR1a includes a DC-coupler device that installs into the camera's battery compartment in place of the battery. The camera power cable from the RCVPR1a connects to the short cable of the DC coupler. The DC coupler may also fit the battery compartment of other Sony cameras. The standard Sony cable for connection between the RM-VPR1 and the multi-connector on the Sony camera is also included.
